I love short stories. I prefer collections to anthologies though. As much as publishers claim their anthologies don't contain "filler," they ALWAYS do (and yes, I know there are some. But statistically? Zero).
This one is not an exception to the rule, but since I'm in a good mood, I'll list the half dozen stories from here that are worth your time.
"Roadkill" by Samantha Kolesnik. Probably the best in the anthology. Love her crisp, Ketchum-esque writing style.
"The Fear of Fallen Leaves" by James Newman. Absurd premise that Newman happens to pull off.
"Phantom Limb" by Kay Hanifen. I guess there is another writer to keep an eye on.
"Skin-Wrapped Gift" by Chad Lutzke. A Lutzke trademark: simple and effective.
"A Cat Named Sue" by Jennifer Soucy. She kinda cheated by having a cat in it, but a good story nevertheless.
"Count Backward from Ten" by Megan Arcuri. A fun, quirky little tale. Stay until the end.
There you go. 32 stories in all. Maybe this will save you some time.
Grade: C
