Busy month! 14 books read. I need to pack for Authorcon, so lets jump into this.
BEST OF THE MONTH:
Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton
This one is horror-adjacent (horror comedy), but the humor and great writing on display here cannot be ignored. It also has a lot of heart, which is not common in books of this subgenre. And yes, I know about the sequel. Will read it soon.
WORST OF THE MONTH:
The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters
I've come to the conclusion that I just don't like most gothic horror. Unless it's extremely well written, don't recommend any. Thanks.
The rest:
The Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel. I really didn't like Station Eleven either. Grade: D
Bitch Planet by Kelly Sue Deconnick (graphic novel). Good premise and fun to read. Grade: C
Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado (collection). Some good stuff, but mostly forgettable. Grade: D
Crave by Tracy Wolff. It probably holds the record for the most uses of the word "swoon." Grade: C
Waking the Moon by Elizabeth Hand. Love the dark academia vibe, but was bored by the plot. Grade: D
Graveneye by Sloane Leong (graphic novel). Nominated for a Stoker, but not my style. Grade: D
Her Three Lives by Cate Holahan. Solid mystery, but nothing earth-shattering. Grade: C
Marvel Meow by Nao Fuji (graphic novel). Cutest graphic novel ever. Grade: A
Maneaters: The Cursed by Chelsea Cain (graphic novel). Great Maneaters spinoff. Grade: B
Things We Do in the Dark by Jennifer Hillier. Perhaps my favorite from her so far. Grade: A
Joker/Harley: Criminal Sanity by Kami Garcia (graphic novel). Stoker-nominated work. Really good. Grade: B
Jar of Hearts by Jennifer Hillier. Another hit from the always-reliable Hillier. Grade: B
Time to party!
