Cavallaro's Cavalcade of Carnage
No time for chit chat. Let's get into it.

BEST OF THE MONTH: Black Wind by F Paul Wilson

I love the Repairman Jack books, and also the Adversary Cycle, but THIS has got to be his best book. Part historical fiction, part horror. Great writing. Wilson is never bad, but this is another level.

WORST OF THE MONTH: Love and Rockets by the Hernandez Brothers (graphic novel)

It's rare that I dislike a graphic novel this much. I use graphic novels as a change of pace, which I need every now and then from reading so many novels. This one I could barely get through.

The rest:

The Dismembered by Jonathan Janz. A gothic tale from Janz. As usual, everyone seems to like it way more than I did. Grade: D
A Personal Matter by Kenzaburo Oe. Some moments are genuinely moving, but mostly a bore. Grade: C
Memory, Sorry, and Thorn by Tad Williams (trilogy). Sometimes I think I should give up on fantasy. Grade: D
Southern Cross by Becky Cloonan (graphic novel). Great art, and good concept, but not really for me. Grade: C
Fairy Tale by Stephen King. A lagging second act prevents it from receiving an A. Grade: B
Lola on Fire by Rio Youers. I much prefer Rio when he does off-the-wall stuff like Mama Fish. Grade: C
The Armageddon Rag by George RR Martin. Not bad, but there are music nostalgia stories that are better. Grade: C

Stay tuned for All Horror October!
