Once again, I've read only horror novels for the month of October. I also read exactly 13 books, so there is some serendipity here.
The results:
BEST OF THE MONTH: On the Savage Side by Tiffany McDaniel
Ok, maybe it's a stretch to include in my all-horror month, but you can't reasonably expect me to wait a whole damn month to read this. Plus, it's a serial killer novel, and that's plenty close enough. At any rate, this was a very easy choice for best of the month. I've already reviewed this one for the site, so I won't rehash everything that I've already said. Basically, if you like McDaniel's work, you'll like it. If you don't like her work....you will probably still like it. But you will have to wait until February to read it.
WORST OF THE MONTH: Pride Mates by Jennifer Ashley
My first foray into paranormal romance (hey, I'll try anything once), and I must say that this is most definitely not for me. If a guy is a shape-shifter and is also hot...which one of those two things is more interesting? I mean, if a guy is a damn werecat, who cares how nice his stupid cheekbones are?! Again...not for me.
The rest:
Lone Women by Victor LaValle. The Changeling is the book to read from Victor. Grade: C
Torture the Sinners by Judith Sonnet. Nice gore, but wasn't invested in the story. Grade: D
House of Penance by Peter Tomasi (graphic novel). Good artwork, but the story was a little convoluted. Grade: C
Slice of Cherry by Dia Reeves. Wants to be a YA horror comedy, but it's not really funny. Grade: C
Bad Girls Don't Die by Katie Alender. YA Ghost/evil doll story. Predictable, but still solid. Grade: C
Generation Dead by Daniel Waters. Decent YA zombie story, but there's better YA out there. Grade: C
Redneck by Donny Cates (graphic novel). Another one with great art and lacking story. Grade: C
Lost by Gary Devon. Award-winning serial killer book. Don't know why. Grade: C
Hour of the Witch by Chris Bohjalian. Mainstream historical fiction. Would be better with 100 pages shaved off. Grade: C
Survivor's Club by Lauren Beukes/Dale Halvorsen. Similar premise to Hendrix's Final Girl Support Group, only not as fun. Grade: C
The Enemy by Charlie Higson. Yet another YA zombie book that isn't nearly as good as Maberry's Rot and Ruin. Grade: C
That's it! A bunch of average books and one great one. See ya next month
