I've been a fan of Cushing for a long time. I think she is one of the better dark humor writers in horror (sometimes more "dark" than "humor"). Mr. Suicide is an excellent example of Nicole at full power. Do yourself a favor and read it.
I was lucky enough to get a copy of The Plastic Priest from Cemetery Dance (out in December 2023).
I'm not sure what to say about it. On one hand, I finished it in one sitting. On the other hand, I felt...deprived? of a story?
The Plastic Priest tells a simple story and I can't get over the feeling that the whole thing was a Trojan Horse of a novella whose main purpose was for Nicole to unpack all of her thoughts on religion and theology. Not that there is anything wrong with that. There isn't. That is the part of the book that is funny, engaging, and interesting. The plot itself is the problem here; just a bit dull.
