Mark Steensland has written two exceptional books with co-author James Newman, In the Scrape and The Special.
In the Scrape is a moving coming-of-age tale, while The Special is like a raunchier, modernized The Monkey's Paw.
This brings us to Steensland's solo venture, The Nested Man.
Pros:
-Despite the far-fetched plot, I found myself going along with it without reservation
-Fast moving narrative, aided by the short chapters
-I love paranoia-themed stories like this
Cons:
-I couldn't shake the feeling that the book felt like a lower octane Blake Crouch novel, which isn't necessarily negative.
-The ending was a little abrupt
Another book that I kept thinking of while reading this was Matthew Warner's excellent Eyes Everywhere, which is another good novel that uses the paranoia trope.
The verdict? If you can suspend disbelief at a high level, you will probably enjoy this one from Mark Steensland.
Out on August 13th from Cemetery Gates Media.
Grade: C
