It's October and all in the world is right. Carved pumpkins everywhere, a mini-pumpkin in my drink holder in the Jeep, Halloween decorations throughout my neighborhood, and a Christmas movie at the theater? Wait a second. Is this 2024's version of A Nightmare Before Christmas? Are people now going to argue if this is a Halloween movie or a Christmas movie? It's quite possible, but all I know is that it's been a long time since I went to a movie opening weekend, and this one was worth it to see on the big screen.
We catch up with Art the Clown in this new edition of Damien Leone's over-the-top masterpiece of gore-horror. It's now nearing Christmas and he has a bone to pick with those who have done him wrong. Art wants nothing more than to celebrate the season, to be Santa for a bunch of hopeful kids, and spread the joy of sugar cookies and tinsel. Well, his version of tinsel, anyways. Will he be granted his wish of the best Santa in the city? Only time will tell!
Alright, so. I just got home from this one, oddly an open caption version so I had to keep myself from reading the movie the whole time and instead glue my eyes on the gore-tastic events on the screen. Multiple times there were audible chuckles (myself included), so it did keep that going from previous iterations. Did anyone walk out of the theater? No. Did anyone puke in the aisles? No. Is this becoming the new "promotional speak" for horror movies to try and entice people to go see it? Yes. Now don't get me wrong, this movie was extremely gory and fucked up. But if you've seen the first two in the series, then this movie should not shock or surprise you in a way that the media keeps hyping it to be. It's just gory in a different way, and if you're coming into this movie blind without having seen the first two and didn't somehow know what you were in for, I ask you, why?
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. A few laughs, new and interesting kills, the flow was nice. I had previously reviewed the first movie and gave it a C+ rating, saw the second one which I didn't review and would have given an A, this series really grew on me in that second movie. This time around I was also heading for an A, right up until the final fifteen minutes. There were just a few things that happened (actions and dialogue) that sadly brought this down to a B for me. To have that strong of a gore nightmare throughout come down to the end and be the way it was, it just didn't do it for me. Much in the same way I felt with the last five minutes of The VVitch or Hereditary. All that being said, I am very much looking forward to the next installment!
