BEST OF THE MONTH:
The Night Always Comes by Willy Vlautin
Another solid recommendation from the trusty Mark Sieber. Family noir drama? Crime? Poor people mystery? Doesn't matter. Hooks you immediately.
WORST OF THE MONTH:
Teenage Timberwolves: Lust for Lightning by Serra/Havoc (graphic novel)
Too much text, too complicated. Good art though.
The rest:
My Life in Horror Vol 2 by Kit Power. Another strong autobiographical book from Power. Grade: B
Straydog by Kathe Koja. Officially my favorite book from her. Better than her books for adults. Grade: A
Pink Neon by Megan Stockton. Dark plot about prostitutes, but I wasn't hooked (ha). Grade: C
The Prettiest Girl in the Grave by Kristopher Triana. I love Triana, but not one of his best. Grade: C
Animal by Lisa Taddeo. I love these angry-girl plots, but something about the prose rubbed me the wrong way. Grade: C
Eternal Darkness by Tom Deady. Not bad, but I think we've all read this book before. Grade: C
Persistence of Vision by John Varley (collection). This is the kind of science fiction that turns me off of the genre. Grade: D
Calculating God by Robert Sawyer. Love the concept of this first contact novel, but not enough gas in the tank. Grade: C
Pam Kowolski is a Monster! by Sarah Langan. Kept my interest, but I do think she has better stuff. Grade: C
