Rough month. Tell your loved ones how you feel about them. You never know when you'll be out of time.
BEST OF THE MONTH
Animal Pound by Tom King (writer)/Peter Gross (art)
A modern day re-telling of Orwell's Animal Farm. Like Orwell's classic, I would not be surprised to see Animal Pound end up in History classrooms in 20 years. Heartbreaking and important musings on herd mentality.
WORST OF THE MONTH
Tartufo by Kira Jane Buxton
It hurts me to give a bad review to the author of Hollow Kingdom, one of my absolute favorite books of all time. I just felt disconnected from every character and the humor only affected me at a superficial level.
The rest:
Over my Dead Body by Sweeney Boo (graphic novel). Good art, but was never fully invested in the story. Grade: C
Whiteout by Gabriel Dylan. I usually love these one-setting horror stories. Too many annoying characters though. Grade: D
Ex Machina by Brian K Vaughn (writer) and Tony Harris (art). Vaughn is great, but this one is drenched in complex dialogue and political intrigue. Not for me. Grade: D
Primitive War by Ethan Pettus. The movie is better, which is something I rarely get to say. Grade: D
Old Head by Kyle Starks (graphic novel). Starks never disappoints me. "Space Jam meets Fright Night," but with a ton of laughs. Grade: A
Big Bad Me by Aislinn O' Loughlin. There are better YA horror novels out there. Off the top of my head, Merciless by Danielle Vega. Grade: D
Infested by Angel Luis Colon. Trim some of the fat off, and this one easily goes up at least one letter grade. Grade: C
Jane Goes North by Joe Lansdale. Another good one from the master. Grade: B
Black Cat Tales (anthology). As with most anthologies, some good and some bad. Grade: C
Sawkill Girls Claire Legrand. The hype doesn't quite match the reality. Grade: C
Eradicator by David Simmons. Better than Ghosts of East Baltimore. Like a mashup between Chuck Palahniuk and Chandler Morrison. Grade: B
Kill Them All by Kyle Starks (graphic novel). The dude just doesn't do bad comics. Grade: B
