BEST OF THE MONTH
What About the Bodies by Ken Jaworowski
He did it, everyone. He actually wrote a book that's even better than his debut, Small Town Sins, which I was sure was impossible. Same format here: multiple plots converge (don't let this deter you), in yet another great crime mystery with tons of heart. We have a genuine budding star in crime fiction here. Can't wait to see what he does next.
WORST OF THE MONTH
What Happens at Night by Peter Cameron
There is probably a good story in there someone, but I couldn't get past Cameron's writing style.
The rest:
The Drowning Machine and Other Obsessions by Emma E Murray. Typical collection; peaks and valleys. A few more peaks though. Grade: B
Animal Castle by Delep/Durison (graphic novel). An inferior version of Animal Pound; both Orwellian re-imagionings. Grade: C
They Fear Not Men in the Woods by Gretchen McNeil. McNeil's foray into adult fiction. Not bad, but I prefer her YA stuff. Grade: C
Cannibals by Jen Conley (collection). From the author of the wonderful Seven Ways to Get Rid of Harry. Grade: B
Famous by Blake Crouch. I wasn't expecting this propulsive drama from the master of the sf technothriller. Close second place this month. Incoming A24 film w/Zak Efron. Grade: A
The God of the Woods by Liz Moore. Really surprised I didn't care for this Anthony Award winner. Overhyped maybe? Good story, but was buried by a slower-than-slow-slowburn narrative. Grade: C
The Autumn Springs Retirement Home Massacre by Philip Fracassi. Another decent story buried with a slow-moving plot. Grade: C
Superman: Red Son by Millar/Johnson (graphic novel). Finally got around to this Superman classic. Great alternate universe take on Supes. Grade: B
Mindworks by Neal Shusterman (collection). My least favorite of all the Shusterman's I've read (a lot). Grade: C
