Books
Multiple murders and executions. A mysterious woman with strange artifacts. A kidnapping. A car chase. Normally this would be enough action to fill an entire novel, but HUNT AT THE WELL OF ETERNITY has all of this and more in the first twenty-five pages. To say this is a fact-paced novel is a gross understatement; the action starts within the first couple pages and quite literally doesn’t let up until the final chapter.

The story centers around Gabriel Hunt, an adventurous archeologist who is a cross between Indiana Jones and James Bond. With the help of his brother, Michael, he travels the world in search of rare artifacts and forgotten civilizations. HUNT AT THE WELL OF ETERNITY opens with both Gabriel and Michael in attendance at a new exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Arts. Soon after arriving, a beautiful woman approaches the brothers and presents them with a bottle of water wrapped in a Civil War flag. This seemingly simple act triggers a series of events that leads Gabriel across the United States, Mexico, and Guatemala as he seeks to unravel the mysteries around every turn.

HUNT AT THE WELL OF ETERNITY is the very definition of a pager-turner. You rarely get a chance to catch your breath before Gabriel finds himself knee-deep in his next wild adventure. In fact, the book is so enjoyable you could easily read it in one sitting, unaware of the pages flying by. That being said, the book is so action-packed that it almost acts as a double-edged sword. With the exception of one secondary character who is somewhat fleshed out as she travels with Gabriel on his quest, the characterization is skin-deep at best. Other than a physical description and a couple quick mentions of past exploits, we know nothing of Gabriel Hunt (or any of the other characters, for that matter). Being that this is just the first book in an ongoing series of Hunt’s exploits, I’m hoping we’ll get more details along the way.

This is an easy one to recommend for the adventure fans out there. Action, intrigue, suspense, romance…..it doesn’t get much better than this. I give it an 8 out of 10, and can’t wait for book two (coming in August 2009, and written by series editor Charles Ardai) to be released.

HUNT AT THE WELL OF ETERNITY is available as a mass-market paperback from Dorchester Publishing for $6.99.
