This is going to be a little off the cuff, but it's straight from the heart. It was recently announced that Bruce Campbell has a treatable but incurable form of cancer. It looks like he's going to fight it and doesn't want his fans to worry. I worry anyway.
I love this guy. He played Ash in Evil Dead and Elvis in Bubba Ho-Tep. Those films alone make him a legend. By all accounts, he's a nice guy and has an awesome sense of humor (if you couldn't already tell from the the title of his autobiography If Chins Could Kill). If anything, he brings joy to a lot of people.
Mortality has been on my mind quite a bit, and this started happening before I hit my 40s like Wile E. Coyote hits a fake tunnel. I'm not doing bad healthwise but I've become more more aware of things like cancer, especially since it has taken members of my family and currently threatens someone in my family. I'm a religious person, but, even with that perspective, cancer will never not bother me.
Bruce took on the army of darkness, he faced a soul-sucking mummy in Bubba Ho-Tep, fought the Maniac Cop, adventured in the West as Briscoe County Jr., and even helped a spy get out of a few dozen jams in Burn Notice. Yes, this is all fiction, and Bruce Campbell is just an actor, but I hope he continues to face this challenge as bravely as his heroic characters. A part of me even dares to hope that he'll crush this illness to a pulp because I just want him to be okay.
Good luck, Bruce. And hang in there.
