Brian Keene recently announced that he will not be involved with The Horrorfind Weekend Convention this year, or any more years in the future. This makes me very sad.

Not that I blame Brian a bit. I do not intend to go into reasons why he has chosen to part company with Horrorfind at this time. Really, it's none of my business.

Brian has done so much for the community with his association with Horrorfind. He didn't do it all himself, but he was a big part of what made HF such a horror fiction-friendly con. There are horror conventions devoted to film. A hell of a lot of them. And there are ones dedicated to horror fiction. Horrorfind was unique in that it was split pretty much down the middle. It catered to the autograph seekers, the gorehounds, and to the writers and readers of horror ficiton.

Horrorfind became a place where famous as well as not-so-famous writers could converge, talk shop, meet fans, and perhaps most importantly, sell books. It's hard to make a buck in publishing these days, and a weekend where dozens of fans could walk up to an up and coming writer's table, meet him or her, and perhaps buy a book was a Godsend.

There is nothing like The Horrorfind Convention for me. No other place where I can hang out with my online friends, meet new ones, talk to writers, see and meet celebrities, and also to behold some of the coolest costumes ever. A fantasy weekend that always brightened up my otherwise gloomy life.

I used to take my kids to Horrorfind and they loved it. My stepdaughter, India, told me that her best memories of childhood are of the con.

I wanted to take a minute and publicly thank Brian Keene for all he did with The Horrorfind Weekend Convention. I'm not saying that the end is nigh for Horrorfind, nor am I saying that I will not be attending it any more. I have reservations for this year and I'm not canceling them. I am considering it, though. I'm not sure what this will mean for horror fiction programming at Horrorfind. It doesn't look good and Brian's loyal fans are not pleased.
