This Joe Dante film didn't ever seem to get the exposure it deserved. If you--or your kids--like 80's Spielberg-type family fantasy movies, this will be a great choice.

Three preteen archetypes make a space ship in a basement. You have your brain, your troubled kid from the other side of the tracks, and your dreamer. It's all pretty silly when you get right down to it, but Explorers is sweet and wistful. The computer graphics might seem like cave scrawlings today. I suppose they were pretty state of the art at the time.

Later stars River Phoenix and Ethan Hawke are two of the kids, Dick Miller is great as a helicopter pilot, and Amanda Peterson (who died last year) plays a love interest.

Explorers was a big box office disappointment, especially after Dante's previous movies was the incredibly successful Gremlins, but I always loved it.
