Cthulhu Mythos: Do you love it, like it, recommend it, deal with it, or hate it?
« on: September 08, 2009, 09:00:12 AM »

Okay, this sub-genre of the genre has not impressed me yet.  From what I've gathered, Cthulhu is one of the Great Old Ones created by H.P. Lovecraft and the mythos contains a ton of unpronouncable names (like r'gnotdseqsfqz nagsik'dk etc, ha ha).  There have been a lot of writers who have picked up on the mythos and a lot of fiction has been written.

I know some people LOVE this stuff.  There is even a whole Convention for it... and it is local to me, but I don't know if I'd want to go!

Maybe I started with the wrong book, Brian Lumley's Titus Crow: The Burrowers Beneath.  I hated this book. There I said it.  I found parts interesting, but it could have been so much better in many ways.  Okay, I reneg, I didn't "hate" it, it just really bored me after awhile. I felt no tension or fear… and no real interest to keep reading. I finished it, and felt really satisfied that it was over.  It has turned me off from reading any more Lumley or Cthulhu related books.

I have some H. P. Lovecraft sitting in my TBR pile, and James A. Moore's Deeper. But now, I don't feel as happy about having them available to read.

What Cthulhu books/stories, if any, do you recommend to people?

I don't think it would be my thing (although, admittedly, I haven't read much of it).

I like the idea of big godlike monsters that wreak havoc, cause inner tumoil & terror, and have worshippers... I just want more from the stories than what I just read.

I've only tried a couple of the books and can't even remember which ones they were, but I gave up on them pretty quickly.  I don't expect to try any more ever again.

I'm glad to know that I am not alone in my thought processes.  I will still read James A. Moore's Deeper, and I will try my Lovecraft books, but I am not going to actively seek out other Cthulhu books unless someone I trust says "youse gotta try dis!"

I've read Deeper and it's pretty good. Don't let that whole Cthulu thing throw you. Deeper reminds me more of Guy Smith's Crab books anyway.
As for Lovecraft, I've tried, and tried. Meh. Just can't get into it. I guess I will have to try again at some point, but, with my TBR pile rivaling that Tower in Piza, who knows.

Now THAT has made Deeper move a hell of a lot closer to the top of the TBR pile!  I love a good fun Guy N. Smith book.

I bought the Annotated Lovecraft books a year or so ago to try him out. I read one story, and was a little bit unimpressed. So, I put them aside for later.

I'll go along with the rest of you and further alienate Horror Drive-In from the rest of the community. I've read HPL when I was a teenager and while I was impressed with the scope of his ideas, the actual reading was labor. Hard labor. The word, turgid, comes to mind.

However, there is a Cthulhu Mythos book that I highly recommend: Robert Bloch's Strange Eons. Don't read it for the Mythos, read it because it's Bloch.

"Don't read it for the Mythos" are the words I like to hear.  Let the story be good despite its surroundings and connections!  Grin Thanks Mark!

I thought DEEPER was absolutely terrific.  I definitely don't think of it as a typical Cthulhu book...

Careful John, or you may make me read it before your books!  Wink

I've also read DEEPER, and Cthulhu never crossed my mind when I went through it.  I wasn't aware it was supposed to fall in that category?

Alan M. Clark put Cthulhu in my head when I saw the paintings for the book back in 2007.  He wouldn't say what the paintings were for, just that they were Lovecraft/Cthulhu Mythos related.

I don't think it stands to really be categorized though.

I dig the Lovecraft stories. I think he created something very unique and fun and his style is terrific. But I've yet to read anything by another author that is any good at all. Most of it makes me want to microwave myself.

Have you read Bloch's stuff, Ryan? More of his Cthulhu stories are collected in Mysteries of the Worm.
