Ah yes, the first sequel. Does it match up well with the original? Um, no. But it's funnier than hell to watch.
When I first saw the film, I absolutely hated it. Despised the thing. However, over the years, it's become a guilty pleasure. In fact, it's one of my, if not the, favorite sequels of the franchise.
See rabid parakeets... see an S&M gym teacher naked and spanked with wet towels... see hot dogs burst into flame... etc. The list goes on.
My favorite part of the film is when Freddy enters reality. Now, in a way, it breaks the movie apart. Having Freddy emerge from the shadows isn't really a good thing. And it's one of the reasons why the original works so well. However, when you have a weak film, probably was the best thing for our working screenwriter to use.
Speaking of the scene, it's a howler! Yes, we've got Freddy's chilling line that everyone at the party are now all his children. But the funniest part? There's a guy at the party slowly approaching Freddy, telling our Dream Stalker that everything is okay and that he's simply there to help him. What does Freddy say? "Help yourself, fucker." HAHA! When he said that, the entire audience went wild with laughter. And I think that Robert Shaye knew he had a goldmine there, because in later sequels Freddy uses the "F" word quite a bit.
Thankfully, Freddy's dark humor is still absent. He does THE HOWLING bit of "you've got body, and I've got the brains" but that's about it.
Also, why would Freddy want to possess the body of our hero (who is portrayed by an actor that makes watching the grass grow a good idea)? Freddy already has the power of nightmares, so why take on the body of this wimp? It's a real weak idea.
And how does Freddy get defeated in this one? By the power of love!
As I've mentioned, this is now probably my favorite sequel in the series. It's simply so bad I don't know how you couldn't love it.
Before I go, I also have to mention the film's dubious turn into its "homoerotic" phase. Is there evidence that it's true? There's definitely a few scenes that would suggest so.
What's the feedback on this one?

I'm quite fond of this one. It was one of the first Nightmare movies I saw, and like you said Trever, it's so bad it's so entertaining. However, I do find it to be a dark, sinister film at times (in between the exploding hot dogs and birds), which helps my enjoyment. Still, the lack of dream sequences hurts the movie, and yeah, the possession idea, while understandable in a way (Freddy was defeated in the original, his powers taken away, so he has to find a way to resurrect himself and blah blah blah...), is pretty weak. But, I do pop this movie in now and then and enjoy the fuck out of it
