NOES 3: Dream Warriors

This seems to be everyone's favorite sequel in the series.  For a long time it was mine, too.  But for some reason I now have a hard time watching it.  Maybe it's because I've seen it too many times.  I don't know.

It's interesting because not only did Wes Craven return to co-write the screenplay, but he was assisted by Frank Darbont.  So already we know we're in good hands.

The story is decent as we now have teenagers fighting Freddy on his own turf.  It's also the debut of that drug Hynocil.  That would figure prominenty in later entries like FREDDY VS JASON.

Our cast is headed by Heather Langenkamp and that old warhorse stalwart Craig Wasson.  If you haven't seen him in BODY DOUBLE, drop what you're doing and go watch it.  You won't be disappointed.

We also have John Saxon reprising his role from the first film.  That's always a good thing.  I like that there's continuity in the series.  It was always its strongest point.

Unfortunately, we now have Freddy's dark humor emerging.  Of course, this is what endeared him to fans, but I never truly liked it.  There's the ever popular "Welcome to prime time, bitch!" as well as a slew of others as our resident Dream Warriors enter their nightmares.  There's "What a rush!" as Freddy dispenses with an ex-drug addict, along with "I don't believe in fariy tales, kid!" as he confronts a would-be D&D wizard master.

I also like that Langenkamp gets killed off.  It was time for her.

Patricia Arquette.  Can't stand her.  Her screams are downright pitiful.

We are also introduced to Freddy's origin as the bastard son of a thousand maniacs.  I like that idea.  It added a bit of meat to the bones of the character.

There's also the Dokken theme song that became a hit.  I never liked that band, though.  And the video with Freddy awakening from his own nightmare was pretty lame.  But what can I expect from an 80s heavy metal video?  *sigh*

Finally, and yes I've got to say it: "Where's the fucking bourbon, bitch?"

What's the feedback?

I'll be the first to say, yep, this is my favorite sequel. I was still maybe 12 or 13 when this came out and was coocoo for superheroes and comics and fantasy and this delivered all of that in a horror genre. It blew me away. And having them all be geeks and outcasts was relatable to a lot of horror fans like myself (let's face it, none of us was the Prom King, right?).

I didn't mind Freddy's humor in this one. But yes I do look at this film as the beginning of the end. Freddy gets "character" that grows out of control in the later films.

As for the skeleton battle at the end... Something about it doesn't make sense to this day.

I didn't win, but I was nominated for it. Tongue

And the skeleton battle... it was kinda goofy.  The F/X were a bit cheap, too.

haha, I knew someone was gonna respond to that. Actually my friend was Prom King, and he was kind of a geek. He played bass in my band at the time.

Easily the best Nightmare sequel, and in many ways it's my favourite of the entire series.  Strong story, interesting characters, great, creepy hospital setting and some awesome effects (the human marionette is still one of my all-time favourite horror effects).  Yes, Freddy is becoming the stand-up comic we all know and (ahem) love, but I think this film is a good balance between the humour Freddy and the scary Freddy.  I see this as the true sequel to the first, and along with New Nightmare, makes a nice trilogy.

DW was the very first Nightmare film I ever saw, way back in the late '80s when I was eight or nine, and it had a huge impact on me.

I can't say enough about how much I love this movie - one of the best horror sequels ever made (imho).

I think I've seen each NOES movie only once (possibly twice).  I just never took to them like I did with Halloween or F13.

That being said, I have one vivid memory, and I think it's from this one.  Isn't one of the guys in a hospital bed and the sexy nurse comes in?  Then lashes him to the bed by spitting out tongues that tie him up?  Love that scene.

This is my favorite of the sequels too.  It marks the last time I liked Freddy much (I liked his humor in this one because it still wasn't too over the top, and I liked the kills because his primary weapon was still the blades, instead of that other weird stuff he gets into later).  I agree with Mr. P - I don't like Patricia Arquette at all.  However, I like the rest of the cast (even Mr. D&D) and I like that they brought Nancy and her father back.  John Saxon rocks!
Yes, some of the FX are dated in this, but overall, I enjoy the movie and think it is definitely my favorite of the sequels.  I even like the soundtrack!

You're correct.  This is the one.

Back in the day, my parents owned the first video rental place in my hometown.  I'm pretty sure some company sent us a small preview of NOES 3 on tape and this scene was part of the preview.  I remember watching it over and over.  Not a bad scene to have burned in your 10-year-old brain.  Smiley

I must admit she had nice breasts.

Still, could've done without the cheesy "Are you feeling tongue tied, Joey?" Freddy quip.  That was pretty lame.
