This seems to be everyone's favorite sequel in the series. For a long time it was mine, too. But for some reason I now have a hard time watching it. Maybe it's because I've seen it too many times. I don't know.
It's interesting because not only did Wes Craven return to co-write the screenplay, but he was assisted by Frank Darbont. So already we know we're in good hands.
The story is decent as we now have teenagers fighting Freddy on his own turf. It's also the debut of that drug Hynocil. That would figure prominenty in later entries like FREDDY VS JASON.
Our cast is headed by Heather Langenkamp and that old warhorse stalwart Craig Wasson. If you haven't seen him in BODY DOUBLE, drop what you're doing and go watch it. You won't be disappointed.
We also have John Saxon reprising his role from the first film. That's always a good thing. I like that there's continuity in the series. It was always its strongest point.
Unfortunately, we now have Freddy's dark humor emerging. Of course, this is what endeared him to fans, but I never truly liked it. There's the ever popular "Welcome to prime time, bitch!" as well as a slew of others as our resident Dream Warriors enter their nightmares. There's "What a rush!" as Freddy dispenses with an ex-drug addict, along with "I don't believe in fariy tales, kid!" as he confronts a would-be D&D wizard master.
I also like that Langenkamp gets killed off. It was time for her.
Patricia Arquette. Can't stand her. Her screams are downright pitiful.
We are also introduced to Freddy's origin as the bastard son of a thousand maniacs. I like that idea. It added a bit of meat to the bones of the character.
There's also the Dokken theme song that became a hit. I never liked that band, though. And the video with Freddy awakening from his own nightmare was pretty lame. But what can I expect from an 80s heavy metal video? *sigh*
Finally, and yes I've got to say it: "Where's the fucking bourbon, bitch?"
What's the feedback?

Easily the best Nightmare sequel, and in many ways it's my favourite of the entire series. Strong story, interesting characters, great, creepy hospital setting and some awesome effects (the human marionette is still one of my all-time favourite horror effects). Yes, Freddy is becoming the stand-up comic we all know and (ahem) love, but I think this film is a good balance between the humour Freddy and the scary Freddy. I see this as the true sequel to the first, and along with New Nightmare, makes a nice trilogy.
DW was the very first Nightmare film I ever saw, way back in the late '80s when I was eight or nine, and it had a huge impact on me.
I can't say enough about how much I love this movie - one of the best horror sequels ever made (imho).
