NOES 4: The Dream Master
« on: February 07, 2010, 01:58:54 PM »

"How sweet... fresh meat!"

This is really where the series falls apart, imho.

We have above-and-beyond cheesy 80s music pumped into nearly every scene.  On display are some serious 80s hairstyles that really date the film (and aren't good to look at... I never was crazy about the 80s dos).  Freddy's humor is completely off-the-rails.  It's bbbaaaddd.  "He was always was a little meatball!" *groan*

Is there anything good to say about this mess?  Well, even though absent  Patricia Arquette's role is given to a new face, I do like the continuity that the series builds.  As I've mentioned in other posts, I always thought it was the franchise's strongest point.  It was also nifty seeing the last of the Dream Warriors killed off.  It was a nice way to start the movie.

Then it flies off the tracks.

Freddy dispenses with a kung fu kid in an embarrassing display of moves... he sucks the life out of a brainy girl ("Want to suck face?")... and he turns an athletic chick (who sports one of those aforementioned bad 80s hairstlyes) into a cockroach and squeezes her to death in a roach motel...

All while saying lame one-liners to boot.

And how about that Dream Master?  Goofy.  We've got one chick - Alice - who is defending her dream "gate."  Freddy, of course, stands in the dark gate.  The two have a joust in what appears to be a church, with Alice giving her all to defeat the Dream Stalker.  Of course, he comes out laughing.  UNTIL Alice remembers the Dream Master rhyme.  How does she defeat him?  By showing a mirror that captures Freddy's reflection.  Uh huh.  And then the souls of his victims, which are prominently displayed on his chest, rip him apart.

That's the end.

Well... sorta.  The final scene shows Freddy's reflection in a wishing pond.  So a fourth sequel was inevitable.

This was the last Elm Street film to be highly popular.  By the time THE DREAM CHILD came along, Freddy was losing steam and the mess that is the fifth film didn't really help.  It was a good move for New Line to stop the runaway train with FREDDY'S DEAD.  At least they could save some face.  But those two films are for other threads.

What's the feedback on THE DREAM MASTER?

I actually liked the roach motel death. As for the film, I can still tolerate it today. I liked that they tried to attack the dream world in new ways. But Freddy is definitely no longer scary. And I can't really say he's cool, beyond just being a unique horror icon. I really need to watch it again to have a better sense of it...it's been a while.

I liked the original idea that had the potential victims able to time travel through their dreams.  It would've been interesting to see Freddy in different cultures.

Of course, Robert Shaye vetoed Craven's idea and... ah well.

I've always enjoyed TDM.  It's not a great horror flick, and this is Freddy at his most comical, but it's a fun movie to just sit back on a Saturday night, leave your brain at the door and have a good time.

Strangely, that's what hurts the films, imho.

We have a great dreamscape that should be utilized to its fullest.  There's a concept there that should have us thinking about these nightmares.  It was ripe for discovery, but instead they went with an idiot Freddy.

And speaking of DREAMSCAPE, what a coincidence that this film came out shortly before the original NOES and nearly employed the same ideas.  Heck, it even sported a villain that grew claws out of his fingers.  Hmm.

Ok, I actually sorta like the first... half hour or so I think... but when the original kids (from part 3) are killed off, the movie takes a nose-dive.  Freddy is obnoxious, I hate the effects at the end with the souls, and they just seem to try waaay too hard to be entertaining.  After the first few kills, done with the classic glove, Freddy apparently decides that his signature weapon isn't good enough and he can start changing people.  Too weird for me.
I didn't like it, but it had its moments, and I agree that I love the continuity by keeping characters from the previous film involved.

I like Kincaid's death.  I thought it would've been cool to just leave him on a planet surrounded by cars, but having Freddy kill him with the glove was decent.  And what about his dog named Jason?  Ha!  Still can't get over Freddy's resurrection coming via a fire pissing canine...

Joey's death?  Meh.  Freddy has to go with the "wet dream" quip that was just too easy.

I agree that Kincaid's death was pretty sweet, and again, the classic glove, used for possibly the last time (I do NOT count the karate scene).  I don't know why Freddy can't just use the glove to fillet the kids.  It is much more compelling and scary, to me at least.
