I agree with The Thing and The Fly.

Same here.

Especially with Carpy's THE THING.  The blood-testing scene still makes me jump!  Ha!

I really like 1978's Invasion of the Body Snatchers... I like the original too, but I almost don't consider them the same thing.

I also really enjoy both versions of The Ring.

Donald Sutherland at end of BODY SNATCHERS is fantastic!

Never could get into any of THE RING films.

Each person to his/her own taste, of course, but to be honest I find almost all of the remakes listed to be completely worthless. The exceptions would be the few I haven't seen.

One film whose stature constantly puzzles me is the '78 remake of BODY SNATCHERS. I've never understood why horror people embrace this movie, which to me overlong and silly. It struck me that way in the theatres in '78; and it struck me the exact same way about a year ago, when I rented the DVD just to discover if I'd missed something all those years back. The remake certainly never made any impression at all on the mainstream culture--make a reference to "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and there is only one film anyone outside the genre will ever think of: the 1956 original.

My wife likes THE RING, but to me there is no comparison with RINGU, surely one of the finest and influential horror films ever made.

So be it.

Agree with you there, Chris.

As for other remakes - the only ones I think are worthwhile are: The Thing, The Fly, The Blob, and most recently The Hills Have Eyes and The Last House on the Left.

I totally agree, Conlon.

Man, I kinda feel bad for Harry here but, and remember it's all subjective and there's no disputing one's taste, but holy CRAP !

I loathed the original Last House in the way it made me feel like when I first saw a dead body on an LA freeway ( some dude jumped from a bridge in Long Beach---I was five) , sick inside, in need of a shower and a  hug from mommy. but at least it was obcenely subversive, original and made a mark in film history...such as it was.. The remake ? Total watered down version ! I...look, the girl in the original was made to pee herself then was shot in THE HEAD ! No coming back. And I couldn't even finish it but did the wife end up biting the dude's wee wee off in the refake ? ( as Trever would say).
Soon we'll see a remake of DEVIL TIMES FIVE...I truly HOPE not...( Reason I bring that movie upo is it was playing with LAST HOUSE at the Drive-in when I saw both movies.Gad, talk about going home in a total and complete fucking FUNK ! )

And, don't get me wrong, I liked the remake of Cat People but the eeriness, subtly and noirish feeling to the original can't be matched. Remember the blood seeping under the door ?

Huh. Another person who didn't think the 78 remake of THE BODY SNATCHERS was all that and a cup o joe. Thanks again, Chris ! I liked the one with Anwar better ! Azn

HOUSE OF WAX !?

Like I said, Harry, welcome, but you have a lot of guys n gals here that adore fine horror so, yeah, making a list of favorite remakes ?
Hmmm...

But I *do* agree with a few of them.

I like most of those movies. At least to some extent.

I could add a lot to the list. The Hammer remakes of the Universal horror classics.

I sort of like the House on Haunted Hill remake.

I had a decent time with Assault on Precinct 13.

Quarantine was a remake and I thought it was excellent.

I suppose Cape Fear could qualify. That was a good one.

Funny Games was pretty good. A direct retelling of the story.

Heck, I even like Psycho.

Welcome to Horror Drive-In, Harry!
