I'm leaving for Scares That Care Weekend tomorrow, so I need to finish this so I can start counting socks.
Lets do this. 11 books read this month:
IN THE SCRAPE by James Newman/Mark Steensland. **A** but you already know this because I reviewed it already.
KINFOLK by Matt Kurtz. **C** Also already reviewed this one.
THEY SAY A GIRL DIED HERE ONCE by Sarah Pinborough. **A** Maybe my favorite writer for the past few years.
GWENDY'S BUTTON BOX by Stephen King/Richard Chizmar. **A** Yeah, it's been a good month for reading.
INSPECTION by Josh Malerman. **B** Love him or hate him, you have to admit that all of Malerman's books are different from each other.
THE DOOR INTO SUMMER by Robert Heinlein. **B** Maybe my favorite Heinlein so far.
SEVERITY by Dan Padavona. **C** Plot reminded me of Bloch, but the writing didn't.
MOTHER LAND by Paul Theroux. **C** Lots of humorous moments, but didn't hold my interest.
PEACE by Gene Wolfe. **D** A Neil Gaiman recommendation. I expected to like it more.
CEMETERY DANCE #77, **B** CD always puts out high quality stuff.
WORST OF THE MONTH: A.D.: AFTER DEATH by Scott Snyder
Let me say first that Snyder still has my allegiance for creating probably my favorite horror graphic novel, SEVERED. But...The plot of A.D.: AFTER DEATH is very convoluted and not quite interesting enough for me to put forth the necessary energy. Also, there are a lot of very lengthy prose passages, which I have an aversion to, since this is exactly what I'm trying to escape by reading a graphic novel in the first place.
BEST OF THE MONTH: THEY SAY A GIRL DIED HERE ONCE by Sarah Pinborough
This was the hardest time I've ever had picking just one. I refuse to do a three way tie, although #2 (IN THE SCRAPE) and #3 (GWENDY'S BUTTON BOX) certainly deserve that. THEY SAY A GIRL DIED HERE ONCE actually isn't my favorite from Pinborough, but it does have all of the classic Pinborough features: immaculate slow-build pacing, three dimensional and sympathetic characters, and an absolutely stunning ending.
That's all.
